Stoke and Birmingham make major moves on transfer deadline day

Stoke and Birmingham made last minute transfer deals literally minutes before the transfer window closed with each bringing in 3 players to help strengthen their squad. Stoke, who are winless so far this season, signed Eidur Gudjohnnsen, Jermaine Pennant and David Wilson while Alex McLeish played the transfer market well and brought in Alex Hleb and Martin Jiranek. Liverpool were also very active at the last minute working on not less than 4 deals but as at the time of writing only Paul Konchelsky's move to Anfield has been confirmed. Carlton Cole was rumored to have also move to Liverpool but it seems that the move has fallen through. Also staying at Liverpool will be Ryan Babel and Lucas, both who were linked with clubs throughout the summer. Although they are still reports of more transfers coming in, what is most noticeable this year is that the Top 3 clubs in the country, Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal have all stayed quiet. Breaking Transfer News

News just in that Martin Demechelis has rejected a move to Premier League champions but instead chose to stay at Bayern Munich. According to Setanta,  The Argentine international, who was earlier rumored to be joining Sevilla, said

" "I will be very honoured to stay at Bayern and fight. The coach gave me his reasoning and he said I had a hard decision to make, but I've accepted it already and there was mutual agreement."

The Blues had bid £10million for the versatile defender's services as they seek cover for an aging defense before the close of the transfer window tomorrow.

Man United 3 - West Ham 0

In the late kick-off, Manchester United piled on misery to Avram Grant side in a predictably one side affair at Old Trafford. Goals by Rooney, Nani and Berbatov sealed a comfortable victory of the Hammers , who are looking none the better from last year and certainly early contenders for relegation.  Nani, in particular, was in splendid form for the Red Devils. He scored a fabulous second goal and set the the third, giving him the Man of the Match honours.

Elsewhere, champions Chelsea continued their unbeaten streak this season with a 2-0 victory of Stoke City. Florent Malouda's goal and a penalty by Drogba sealed the win while maintaining their perfect goal against record this season. 3 games, 0 goals conceded.

In other matches, Blackpool recovered from their mauling by Arsenal last week to draw 2-2 at home against Fulham with Dickson Etuhu scoring a late equaliser for visitors. Wolves and Newcastle also played to a 1-1 draw. Ebanks-Blake and Andy Carroll on the scoresheet for their respective teams.

The shock of the day came from White Hart Lane, as a red-hot Tottenham Hotspurs fell to a 0-1defeat at home to Wigan. Carlo Cudicini's first match back after his accident last year ended in misery as he allow Hugo Rodallega's tame shot to edge pass him into the goal.

Match of the Week: Blackburn v Arsenal and previews

Blackburn v Arsenal
The perennial tussle between the physical elements of Sam Allardyce's Blackburn against the sublime skills of Arsene Wenger's Arsenal. Both teams have been playing well coming into this match and Big Sam will again be hoping to get one over Arsenal and put a dent in the Gunner's title aspirations, similar to their encounter at the end of last season. However, last season, Arsenal came here missing almost three quarters of their first team. They are almost at full strength this time around and should be able to win match by some margin.
The Kid's prediction: Away win

Blackpool v Fulham Renovations to the Seasiders stadium has been completed and they can finally have their Premiership home debut. Given the occasion, this could turn out to be a suprise win for Blackpool.
The Kid's Prediction: Home win

Chelsea v Stoke Last year, Chelsea hammered Stoke City for 7 of the best and I can't see any difference to the either side to suggest a change of results
The Kid's Prediction: Definitely Chelsea

Tottenham v Wigan It this the game where Wigan finally show up for the new season or are we going to have a repeat of last years drubbing for the away team. Somewhere in the middle, I guess.
The Kid's Prediction: Spurs by 2 goals, at the minimum.

Wolverhampton v Newcastle Wolves has suprise everyone by remaining unbeaten after 2 matches completed and should continue their good form against a Newcastle team which is performing well at home severely lacking on their travels.
The Kid's Prediction: Wolves to notch up another win here.

Manchester United v West Ham As the saying goes, "Bad things come in triples", well I think it will be 3 losses on the trot for the Hammers.
The Kid's Prediction: Home win

Bolton v Birmingham A candidate for a draw as 2 average teams battle and ultimately cancelling each other out.
The Kid's Prediction: Draw

Liverpool v West Brom The Reds may feel a little tired after their jaunt to Turkey but should be able to dispatch the Baggies without much resistance.
The Kid's Prediction:Home win

Sunderland v Manchester City Which Manchester City will turn up, the awful one at White Hart Lane or the excellent performers of Eastlands. Your guess is as good as mine.
The Kid's Prediction: Man City to nick it

Aston Villa v Everton Villa may suffer the effects of failing to qualify for the Europa Cup Group stages and might just allow Everton to be sneak a result here at Villa Park.
The Kid's Prediction: Everton win.

Manchester United and Rangers in another Battle of Britain for Champions League

In the Champions League draw which was just concluded, Manchester United and Rangers were paired together again in Group C of the group stages. These two teams will also face Valencia from Spain and first-timers Bursarspor of Turkey. Premiership champions Chelsea will face Marseille, MSK Zilina from Slovakia and in an interesting twist, Spartak Moscow, from Russia in Group F. Tottenham Hotspurs who qualified virtue of the play-off win again Young Boys of Zurich were handed a trip to holders Inter Milan, Werder Bremen and FC Twente. Spurs unfortunately are in arguably the hardest group of all the Premiership challenges. Arsenal were drawn into a relatively easy Group H with Ukranian champions Skhatar Donestsk, FC Braga from Portugal and Partizan Belgrade. The matches will commence in September on the road to the finals which is to be held at Wembley Stadium. Technorati Tags: , , , ,

Aquilani goes to Juve. Really, Why?

I can't understand this move really. Liverpool is  already short handed as it is  and the decide to send their £20mil signing to back to Italy on loan. Come on, has Roy Hodgson really thrown in the towel at this early stage in the season.

They are already bare bones as it is, and they are still letting players go? Aquilani gone and Mascherano probably to follow soon as well. It's crazy. I know Aquilani have been injured for most of last season but he  has had a decent pre-season and should be able to  serve as part of the midfield rotation. Now Liverpool's midfield consist of Lucas, Maxi Rodriguez ,Gerrard, and maybe Cole but he is more of an attacker. That's it. The only ones remaining are young fledglings like Pacheco, although talented but still unproven at this level. I am not including Mascherano cause as I said he will probably be leaving.

2 or 3 midfielders will not get through the whole season playing every match, that's a guarantee.

This is suppose be am important year for Liverpool, for them to claim their place back among the top 4 . With transfer moves like this, I really think Liverpool will struggle to even make it even among the Europe hopefuls.

I sincerely hope to be proven wrong.

Is it time to revamp the Carling Cup?

What's the point of the Carling Cup these days? We have all seen how some Premiership team treat it like a second rate tournament and sending out reserves sides to tackle the competition, but when teams like Blackpool also place scant regard to the tournament then something should be done. Ian Holloway didn't even turn up for his teams match against the MK Dons last night, choosing rather to pursue a transfer target.

How about this for a radical idea? Make the competition purely for the Championship and League Division teams. The winner of the competition gets an Europa Cup spot. This would be an excellent chance for the teams below the Premiership to take the chance and have a go in Europe's second tournament.

Well, I don't even think this suggestion is that radical. For the top teams, survival in the premiership is of utmost importance for it's financial consideration. We have also seen some participants in the Europa League send out reserve sides for matches, much like the Carling Cup. So, why don't we make everybody's life easier and make some changes to the Carling Cup before it loses more of its lustre.\

Plus, most of the Championship and League division teams are made up of Englishmen, unlike the Premiership teams, so it will only be good for the development of English football if this happens

CIty 3 - Liverpool 0

No Balotelli, No Silva, No Boateng, No Kolarov, Adebayor, Given, Jo all on the bench and City still managed to whip Liverpool 3-0 at the Eastland yesterday. A brace by captain Tevez followed the opener by Gareth Barry gave Roberto Mancini a deserved opening home win to ease some pressure in front of his Middle Eastern employers.

City played well and the combination of Adam Johnson and James Milner and Tevez create problems for the Liverpool defense throughout the night. Johnson in particular was definitely the Man of the Match for me. He was quick, energetic with dribbling skills not seen for an English winger in a long time. He could really be the left sided player that national side have not had. Two problems with this though, one he likes to play on the right side of midfield and cut in to his left foot and two, if he could maintain his playing time in this expensively assembled squad.

This line-up worked very well for City but I don't think we would see the same line-up in the next match. I believe the embarrassment array of superstars in the City bench might actually be the downfall of their own making.

Even in the heydays of the Madrid Galaticos and Chelsea's spending spree under Avramovich, there were not as many stars as there are in the City camp right now.

Who's he gonna play as the point man upfront? Balotelli or Tevez or can they play together? Who isgonna play at the wings,  Milner or Silva or Johnson or Philips? What about the midfield; Barry, Toure, De Jong, and Vieira? Well I guess squad rotation would take a new meaning in City for the coming season and judging by the combustible characters in the locker, this might get really interesting.

Having said that, we should spare a thought for Liverpool. The former kingpins of the League has fallen on hard times and I really don't see how they can recover unless significant investment is put into getting players. They are already bare bones as it is and they would probably lose Mascherano and possible Kuyt by the close of the transfer season. If that happens, I'm afraid the Reds will suffer another season of mediocrity.

Weekend Goals Galore

A weekend of premiership goals. I can't remember a time any weekend when we have had 3 teams blasting 6 goals past the opposition without reply.

All in all a total of 35 goals have been scored this weekend. not a bad return and we still have the City vs Liverpool game, which should contribute a few more goals to the weekend tally.

After a summer of at the goal-shy World Cup, we are finally being treated to the best football being played anywhere in the world. I don't think there was a dull match in the premiership this weekend, where teams stroll along and parking the bus in front of the penalty box hoping for a draw

In all matches, there were endless entertainment, with abundance end to end action. Even Blackpool  gave it a go at the Emirates and well, got truly beaten. Nonetheless, it was a honorable effort by Ian Holloway.

I believe this will be the trend for this season, where the managers have more believe in their teams and play positively in every match. Even this early in the season, we have seen that all teams (possibly with the exception of Wigan, at the moment) have the capacity to beat anybody. Newcastle's victory over Aston Villa must serve as a wake-up call to the top teams.

This evening we will see the home debut of Mancini's expensively assembled team and should be feature his latest 2 signings, Balotelli and Milner. This should be a good indication of who will be on the way out of Eastlands as the deadline to submit the 25 players is around the corner. Anybody not on the team this weekend should consider their options before the transfer window closes.

United stumbed yet again at Craven Cottage

Manchester United could only managed a draw at Craven Cottage to continue their bad run of results in south west london. A late Brede Hangeland goal gave Fulham their deserved share of the points in a match marked with a frenetic last 15 minutes.

United, playing without Wayne Rooney because of a stomach upset controlled most of the first half and opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a Paul Scholes classic: a drive from 25 yards out which beat keeper David Stockdale convincingly. This was Scholes's 150 Premier League goal in his long and illustrious Manchester United career.

Fulham did not contribute much in the first half with their most promising play finishing with a fine double save by Edwin Van de Sar from Dickson Etuhu's shot and follow-up. However, they came back strongly in the second half, Bobby Zamora leading the line and giving Johnny Evans a torrid time. Simon Davies finally gave them the equalizer they deserved in the 57 minute off a fine cutback by Zamora.

Sir Alex then brought in Nani, Giggs and Michael Owen, which sparked off a period of dominance for Red Devils culminating in an own goal by Brede Hangeland off a Nani corner. Moments later, Duff was adjudged to have handled the ball in the penalty trying to clear the ball and Nani stepped up to the spot. Stockdale dive to his right and save the penalty, although it was a not a great penalty to begin with.

In the final minute of the game, up pop Hangeland to put the ball in the net and go from zero to hero in less than 5 minutes.

I didn't see this one coming...

Of all the results which I predicted for the weekend, I definitely did not see this one happening.
 Newcastle 6 Aston Villa 0.

Newcastle who looked very much a championship side last weekend when they lost to Manchester United last weekend, decided to make their mark in this season's premiership in this home trashing of Aston Villa. Andy Carroll, who perhaps was their best player last weekend, opened his Premier goal tally with a hat-trick. If I were Fabio Capello, I would definitely be taking a hard look at Carroll's performance over the next couple of weeks. He has shown great promise for Stuart Pearce's U21 side and maybe he could be in line a senior call-up pretty soon.

A brace by Kevin Nolan and Joey Barton's goal completed the goalscorers and if could have been more but for the goalkeeping brilliance of Brad Friedel. Villa were woeful and I don't think they even had a shot on target in normal play. They did have a penalty which was missed by John Carew. In fact, the penalty was also not a shot on target because it was blasted way above the bar.

Kevin MacDonald have had a good run but with his squad of talented players, getting thrashed like this will not do any good to his or his players morale.

Saturday Review

So we are in the 2nd week of the season, and we have our first refereeing controvesy. As England in the World Cup, Stoke found themselves losing all 3 points in their match agains Spurs due to Chris Foy's inability to spot the ball crossing the line. How did he miss this you can only ask. He had the cheek to look over to his linesman standing over at the far sideline for help when he was 3 yards from the action. Really, really poor refereing from Chris Foy.

The game itself was very entertaining, with Spurs grabbing the lead through an fortunate bounce off Gareth Bale's nose and Ricardo Fuller equalizing for Stoke with their usual set-piece strategy (big central defender in front of the opposition goalkeeper). The match winner came from an early contender for "Goal of the Month" with an exceptional volley from Bale, with his left boot ala Marco Vas Basten.

Elsewhere, no real suprise in the other matches, Arsenal and Chelsea thrashed their opponent, Blackpool and Wigan by the same scoreline 6-0. Birmingham and WBA managed home wins, while Wolves played well to grab a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park.

My team for this Saturday is Bolton who convincingly won away at West Ham. Owen Coyle's men showed great movement and passing coupled with strong performances by their captain Kevin Davies and Johan Elmander to notch up this win. As an Asian, I am glad to see Lee Chung Yong continue to impress in this Bolton line-up and definitely one of the first names in Owen Coyle matchday selection.

Weekend Preview

I know I should have started the blog last weekend but I was doing a bit of travelling with screwed my whole schedule. Well, here my preview for this weekend.

Match of the Weekend

Manchester City v Liverpool

Both teams had good results in the Europa winning their matches so they would want to continue their momentum going into this weekend. This will be the home debut for City's summer signings and I think this is going to be a big weekend for Mancini. He has to win this match to ease the pressure and prove to his Middle Eastern employers that they have not made a mistake entrusting him with over £300 millions pounds of their investment in players. A loss here might see him as the first manager to fall this season. We will have our first look at Balotelli in the Premiership and my feeling is that he will be impressive. Also there is the question mark over James Milner and if he starts? and where will he play?

Liverpool, on the other hand, has seen a small revival of sorts under Roy Hogdson and such continue to impress with their workrate and tight organisation at the back. I don't think Torres is fully fit to start so David Ngog will continue to lead the front line.

The Kid's prediction:  a scored draw, possibly 2-2 again.
The Kid's betting tip: Over 2.5 goals @ 1.85

Arsenal vs Blackpool
Blackpool had a great outing at Wigan last week but the Emirates is a different cattle all together. Blackpool can take heart in that Arsenal is probably short in defence with new boy Koscielny suspended. However, Fabregas and Van Piesie will be back for the Gunners to offset the loss of Nasri and should be enough to get them the 3 points.

The Kid's Prediction: Arsenal to win by 2 clear goals.
The Kid's betting tip: Arsenal on the AH +2.5 goals @ 2.05

Birmingham v Blackburn Rovers

Birmingham was a suprise package last year but this year I feel that might struggle. They have not made any significant improvements to their squad and the loss of Joe Hart mean that they do not have an iron wall at the back anymore.

Big Sam will again try to strong arm and stifle the opposition and hope to catch a goal on the counter.

The Kid's Prediction: I can't see pass a goalles draw here.
The Kid's betting tip: Draw @ 3.25

Everton v Wolves

I saw last week's match an was very impressed with both these teams. Although Everton lost at Blackburn but they controlled most of the match and looked good in the movement and passing. Wolves as well, were suprising spritly during their match with Stoke. Being at home and with better quality, this should go Everton's way

The Kid's Prediction: Everton to win big
The Kid's betting tip: Everton on the AH +1 @ 1.8

Stoke City v Tottenham

Spurs looked really impressive last weekend with Bale, Huddlestone and Modric all in good form. Although they had a blip on the astroturd in midweek, they should be all over a Stoke side that looked mediocre last weekend.

The Kid's Prediction: an away win for spurs 3-1
The Kid's betting tip: Away win @ 2.4

West Bromwich Albion v Sunderland

West Brom got a trashing last weekend at the hands of holders, but seriously I don't  think that they are that bad a team. Ya sure, they will be relegation candidates this year but they might give us a suprise or two this season. I am taking WBA to win this one.

The Kid's Prediction: Contrary to the form book, I am taking WBA to win 1-0
The Kid's betting tip: Home win @ 2.4

West Ham v Bolton

After a slow start to his managerial career with Bolton, Owen Coyle has really molded the team into a really good footballing team, doing away with the "kick and run" tactics legacy of Sam Allardyce. West Ham has not shown much improvement under Avram Grant so Bolton should take this match easy.

The Kid's Prediction: Bolton 2-0
The Kid's betting tip: Away win @ 3.25

Wigan v Chelsea

Wigan will be relegated this season. Enough said.

The Kid's Prediction: another trashing for the home team on the cards.
The Kid's betting tip: Chelsea on the AH+2 @ 2.02

Newcastle v Villa

Newcastle is basically the same team which went down 2 season ago, maybe even weaker that that. The only bright spark in the team is Andy Carroll who showed a glimmer of his potential against Manchester United. Villa did not have any post O'Neill hiccup and should continue their good form at St James Park.

The Kid's Prediction: Villa to win 2-0
The Kid's betting tip: Villa on the AH +1.5 @ 2.15

Fulham v Manchester United

Manchester United return to the Craven Cottage where their record is really bad over the last couple of seasons. Last year's capitulation was a testament to how far Fulham has progressed under Roy Hodgson. This season, however, Man United is in imperious form and Sir Alex should be able to the turn tables on new manager Mark Hughes.

The Kid's Prediction: Man U to win 3-1
The Kid's betting tip: Under 2.5 goals @ 1.98

Karl Oyston

News of the Day: Blackpool Chairman's sudden resignation

This story seems to be getting a lot of press inches owing to the fact it is sudden and after Blackpool fantastic weekend result over Wigan. Karl Oyston seems to throw in the towel based on what he claims to be a difficult time in the transfer and his disillusion with the business side of things, especially players' agents.

Well, Karl, get on with the real world. The world of football, like any other, is a business. When you buy a house, or car, or shares, you go through agents. So why not players, who in this business is the product that is on sale. Probably he is still living in the footballing stone age where clubs have much more power over the players. Well, its high time that the players are not protected and not exploited in any way.

Sports agents have flourishing across the Atlantic in the USA where young promising athletes from high school are signed up by agents who continue to nurture them throughout their careers. Now, I guess the sports agent industry is not that regulated in Europe and every Tom, Dick and Harry can be a sports agent.

Therefore, I believe the most important career decision any professional player has to make at the start of his career would be "Who will be my agent".

Elsewhere in the Premiership

All 3 Premiership teams competing in the Europa League had decent results which should see them go through to the Group Stage. Manchester City won 1-0 at FC Timisoara, thanks to a Mario Balotelli goal in the second half. Liverpool triumped 1-0 at home to Trabzonspor, although they would be in a better position if Joe Cole hadn't missed his penalty. Aston Villa played an almost second string side and managed a 1-1 draw with Rapid Vienna with the all important away goal scored by Barry Bannan

"Super Mario" looks like a good signing that can potential catapult Man City to a Champions League spot and win some silverware this year. He looks like a younger version of Drogba, powerful, fast and agile. He should be a handful for Premiership defenders this year.

What is Milner thinking of?

August 19, 2010

News of the Day: James Milner to City

So it finally happened. The protracted transfer saga that began as early as the last day of the previous season has ended. So the question is, do you think this is a good move for City or the player. Personally, I like Milner a lot as a player, his work rate is exceptional and positioning is quite brilliant at times. However, moving to City is may be a very lucrative but potential a very bad footballing move.

The question is begging to be ask: where will he be playing if at all. At Villa, he has a roving role in midfield and that is his best position, I feel. At City, there can only only be one player playing this role:  Carlos Tevez. Mancini likes play with 2 holding players and there they already have Yaya Toure, Nigel de Jong and Gareth Barry. So the only position available are the wide positions where the positions are currently occupied by David Silva and Adam Johnson (Shaun Wright Phillips doesn't really count cause he will definitely be below Milner given the performance over the weekend). As we have seen in the World Cup, Milner doesn't have the pace or dribbling skils to play as a wide player. So my conclusion, he will be warming the bench most of the season if the above players stay healthy. Unless, Mancini plays Milner ahead of Adam Johnson, which would be a travesty because Johnson definitely is someone that City needs. Look at the impact when he come on during the Spurs game and you would be hard pressed to include Milner ahead of Johnson. Whatever it is, the English national team would be the poorer of the lot given that either one of the more promising youngsters would not be playing on a regular basis for his club.

Elsewhere in the Premiership...

It seems that Arsene Wenger is finally getting out the checkbook to sign Sebastian Squillaci from Sevilla. This is definitely a good move as the Gunners are down to only Thomas Vermaelan as their only fit senior defender.

The Blackburn takeover is also rumored to be completed imminently. This should give Big Sam a boost to his transfer kitty but he has come out to say that he plans to be prudent and sensible in his spending. Don't think Big Sam knows what to do with the money I suppose. He has not really managed a club with big spending power and the last time he had money with Newcastle, he got the boot before Christmas.

Weekend Review

August 18, 2010

The new season has just started and didn't it start with a bang. The holders certainly gave notice that it will take something extraordinary from the other teams if they are going to be beaten. Man U also had a great start. The disappointment for the weekend were definitely Manchester City and Arsenal. How is it possible that a team that cost gazillions play like a bunch of amateurs. They could hardly string a pass together. Tevez and Villa were like 2 headless chickens running around. Even if I buy the argument that they would need a couple of months to gel, but seriously you would expect more from Mancini's boys.

This also bring me to the other disappointment of the weekend, Arsenal. Before the match, Arsene Wenger spoke about the need to start strong and how this is going to be a breakthrough year for his boys. From he display at Anfield, I feel this is going to be another long season ahead for the suffering fans. The team would tempt the fans with an oh-so-close attempt at capturing the title but alas, fall short again. Please Arsene, get a shrink and sort out the team. Talent in abundance but mentally fragile like a twig.

The surprise of the weekend was definitely newcomers Blackpool. They probably be another “Hull” and start strong this season and hopefully can gain enough points during this peroid to carry them when they inevitably fall later in the season. Much will depend on Ian Holloway's ability to motivate his team  especially when he bring his side to the Emirates next week. Win that and they would have the momentum. Lose big and they might be in trouble.

My Team of the Week : Blackpool
My Player of the Week : Joe Hart
